PLATE V · NOTES ON CRAFT

Eight decisions. Memorize them.

I had not intended to publish this. My representation insisted. The decisions below are not ‘principles’. Principles can be borrowed. These are decisions, made by me, in this work, and they are reproduced here under protest.

THE CRAFTSMANSHIP
Eight decisions, defined.
For each part of the hot dog: the idea behind why we used it, and the concrete design call we made because of it.
“Metaphor isn't decoration — it's a memory aid for the user. Things that feel familiar are easier to use.”
01
The Bun Becomes Chrome
FROM · TOP & BOTTOM BUN
THE IDEA (BRACE YOURSELF)
A bun does not announce itself. It cradles. The app chrome should warm the workspace without competing with the data inside.
THE DECISION (NON-NEGOTIABLE)
· Top nav uses a soft gold bun gradient token · Sesame seeds are non-decorative — they re-purpose as nav-zone breadcrumb dots · Bottom bun uses the darker bake token reading as "footer rail" · 28px outer radius matches a bun's curve
02
The Sausage as Hero
FROM · THE FRANK
THE IDEA (BRACE YOURSELF)
The frank is the reason the bun exists. The hero card occupies the largest, warmest, most saturated zone — where the eye lands first.
THE DECISION (NON-NEGOTIABLE)
· Hero card spans 60% of the canvas (1.7fr column, 2 rows) · Vertical sausage gradient token with a 2px shine highlight at the top edge · Display type in Fraunces 800 / 64px — same proportion as the sausage to its bun
03
Mustard as Sparkline
FROM · CONDIMENT 01
THE IDEA (BRACE YOURSELF)
A mustard squeeze is a hand-drawn data viz. Its zigzag is not noise — it's the most legible chart at a glance.
THE DECISION (NON-NEGOTIABLE)
· Sparkline drawn as a true zigzag, not a smooth line — every other vertex offset ±8px · 3.5px stroke, mustard-yellow token, round caps · Faint underfill gradient (35% → 0%) to anchor it · Endpoint sealed with a dot — like the last drop
04
Ketchup is Urgency
FROM · CONDIMENT 02
THE IDEA (BRACE YOURSELF)
Ketchup is loud, thick, and impossible to ignore. We reserve it exclusively for things that need a human response — never for decoration.
THE DECISION (NON-NEGOTIABLE)
· Severity scale: high (solid red), medium (orange-red), low (red on cream) · Each alert opens with a tiny ketchup-ribbon icon (a wavy stroke) · Capped at 3 visible — a fourth means escalation, not a longer list
05
Relish as Texture
FROM · CONDIMENT 03
THE IDEA (BRACE YOURSELF)
Relish is granular, scattered, and quiet — it's the background hum of a kitchen. Activity feeds work the same way.
THE DECISION (NON-NEGOTIABLE)
· Each item bullet is a 14×6 rounded rect rotated -12°, mimicking a fleck · Type stays at 12px Inter — never the focal point · No timestamps in the alert column — only here, where chronology is the texture
06
Onion Rings as Filters
FROM · CONDIMENT 04
THE IDEA (BRACE YOURSELF)
An onion ring is a translucent boundary. A filter chip should look like something you can see through — selectable but lightweight.
THE DECISION (NON-NEGOTIABLE)
· Pill chip with a literal ring-icon at the leading edge: outer ring + inner ring · Active state inverts to opaque cream; inactive stays semi-transparent · Color of active border matches the topping it filters (mustard chip → mustard border)
07
Sesame Seeds as Notifications
FROM · GARNISH
THE IDEA (BRACE YOURSELF)
Sesame seeds are accidental — you don't count them, you sense them. Notification dots should sit where the eye naturally drifts.
THE DECISION (NON-NEGOTIABLE)
· The bell badge is a single sesame-seed-red dot · Pattern repeats subtly in the nav bar background — random rotations, no grid · Status dots (left-side traffic-lights) reuse the same 3.5×1.8 ellipse
08
Foil Wrapper as Frame
FROM · WRAPPER
THE IDEA (BRACE YOURSELF)
A hot dog comes wrapped — a soft container that gives it a place to live. The dashboard sits inside a paper-cream shell with rounded corners and a long warm shadow.
THE DECISION (NON-NEGOTIABLE)
· Outer shell uses the paper-cream token on a darker tablecloth gradient · 28px radius, 1px warm border, deep umber drop-shadow · Subtle inset highlight on the top edge for a "creased foil" feel
